The brief
A church tower needed specialist maintenance at height, on a site ringed by mature trees, headstones and a single narrow access road.
Scaffolding the tower would have meant weeks of standing time and ground fixings in a churchyard where that was not acceptable.
The client needed access around the full tower structure from a machine that could set up on the road and reach over the boundary without putting anything on the ground inside it.
The work
The site was surveyed for set up positions that kept the outriggers on the road while still giving the reach needed over the trees and the boundary wall.
The 157P set up on the access road with the boom taken up and over the tree line, bringing the basket in against the tower face without disturbing anything below.
The operator repositioned around the structure as each elevation was finished, which kept the machine in one place on a site with very little room to move.
At the end of the work the machine stowed and the access road was clear the same day.
The outcome
The work was completed from one machine with no scaffold, so there was no standing time and nothing was fixed into the churchyard.
Access around the full tower was reached from set up positions on the road, which kept the site open and left the ground inside untouched.
