The brief
The client maintains a portfolio of telecommunications masts across a wide area, from greenfield lattice towers to rooftop and street pole installations.
Antenna and remote radio unit changes had to be carried out at height on structures that could not be climbed safely, and in most cases the mast had to stay live while the work was done.
They needed a platform that could reach the headframe from ground level, hold a stable working position long enough to complete a swap, and move on to the next site the same day.
The work
Access routes and set up positions were surveyed at each site so the machine could reach the mast from hard standing or a prepared pad without the compound having to be cleared.
The 295P set up on outriggers and took the engineers up to the headframe, with the basket brought in close enough to work on the antennas without contact with the structure.
The operator repositioned around the headframe as each sector was finished, so the engineers stayed in the basket rather than coming down between antennas.
At the end of each site the machine stowed and drove to the next one under its own power.
The outcome
Engineers worked directly from the basket instead of climbing, which took out the rope access element and the standby time that came with it.
Because the platform reaches the headframe from the ground, sites that would previously have needed a climbing team were covered by one machine and one crew.
The same platform has since been used on later phases of the framework, and the client now specifies truck mounted access on positions that would previously have gone to a crane.
